About Bokaro Steel City
Bokaro Steel City is an Industrial city situated in the State of Jharkhand, in India. It is the home of the largest steel plant in India, and several other medium and small industries. Bokaro is the headquarters of the Bokaro district as well as Koylanchal range (Bokaro, Dhanbad and Giridih). It is also one of the three headquarters of Police IG zone, apart from Ranchi and Dumka, covering seven districts- Hazaribagh, Dhanbad, Giridih, Koderma, Chatra, Bokaro, and Ramgarh.
Situated on the Chhota Nagpur Plateau, the vast rolling topography of the city is typical, strewn by graded valleys and winding streams. In this setting, within a short period of three decades, a new city with a strong multi-dimensional economic base and became as a educational hub not for this region but for the entire nation, has blossomed into a regional urban centre of around a million people drawn from different parts of the country, giving the city the character of Mini India. Bokaro is known as Steel city, because the largest steel plant our country in situated here. The giant public sector SAIL has their steel plant situated at Bokaro Steel City known as BSL or Bokaro Steel Plant.About 40 thousand people are working in this plant day & Night. The steel plant is well organised concern having rich infrastructure in Bokaro Steel City.
Geography
Bokaro is located in the eastern part of India at 23.29°N 86.09°E. It is located in picturesque surroundings on the southern bank of river Damodar with Garga, one of its tributaries meandering along the southern and eastern outskirts of the city. On the north, the city is flanked by the high ranges of the Parasnath Hills and on the south just beyond the river Garga, it is enveloped by the Satanpur hillocks. Two artificial cooling ponds have been built for use in steel making. A dam on river Garga has been built to supply water to the township as well as the steel plant, but due to ever increasing demand Tenughat dam is supplementing it.
Demographics
As of 2010 India census, Bokaro Steel City had a population of 23,08,749. Males constitute 53% of the population and Females constitutes 47% of the population. Bokaro Steel City has an average literacy rate of 66%, higher than the National Average of 59.5%, with Male literacy of 65% and Female literacy of 67%.
CHAS
The nearest small town to the steel city is CHAS, lying at the south-eastern tip of the site on the junction of the Dhanbad-Ramgarh-Ranchi and Dhanbad-Purulia-Tatanagar roads. Chas is the Headquarters of the subdivision. The District may be categorized into three natural formation :-

- Damodar, Ganga & Tenughat Valley
Transportation
Railway
Bokaro steel city is well connected with all parts of the country by railways and roadways. Bokaro Steel City is the main station of the city situated at 12 km from City Centre. All mail/express trains including Rajdhani and Shatabdi stop here.
Road
Bokaro also lies on the junction of NH-32 and NH-23. NH-32 passes through Chas whereas NH-23 passes through the main city. Naya More is the Main Bus Terminal planned for 500 buses at a time. A Government Bus Terminal is just adjacent to main Bus Terminal. Besides Naya More there are two more Bus Terminal, Basanti More in Sector-9 and Dharamshala more in Chas.Regular Volvo bus service from City centre and Naya More are also available.

Private cars and taxi facilities are available everywhere in the city. Regular commuting in the city is supported by numerous trekkers, autos, rickshaws and mini buses. The city boasts well maintained roads in whole state as the maintenance is under authority of Steel Plant.
Air
Bokaro Steel city airport is currently used only by private carriers of Sail and dignitaries. The Steel City is all set to figure in the commercial flight map soon, with private airlines initiating the process to launch its flights between Bokaro and Kolkata. Bokaro Steel Limited has expressed its readiness to allow the use of its airport for the purpose. The nearest Commercial Air Base is at Ranchi (130 km).
